Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is not limited to physical violence. Threats of bodily injury, false imprisonment, kidnapping, trespassing, harassment, and stalking can all qualify as domestic violence charges.  Some Courthouses have special Courts dedicated to cases the Prosecutor has classified as domestic violence.  Even before a conviction, the Courts can +issue a protective order that prevents you from contacting your spouse and in some cases your family.

The California legislature and Courts have steadily increased the punishment for domestic violence.  Potential consequences include a strike conviction, Jail time, 52 weeks of anger management, spousal battery classes, fines, community service, probation, restraining orders, restitution, potential lifetime ban from owning or possessing firearms, loss of child custody or parental rights, and even potential prison time are among the many serious repercussions that could result from a conviction of a domestic violence charge.  Additionally, domestic violence can be charged as serious or violent charges, subjecting you to California's three strikes sentencing scheme.
